Greta Thunberg Gets it Right For Once

But she fails to identify the NIMBY roots of the issue she raises

It's no secret that I am not a fan of Greta Thunberg. While I can excuse her hypocrisy last year because she is a teenager, I think that the climate obsession she and others promulgate is economically backwards and superstitious. But for the first time, I think we all need to admit she has a point- albeit for reasons other than those she personally identifies as underlying causes in her recent post on Medium.

Thunberg, indeed, is basically berating the same underlying group that I have ridiculed for years, without the benefit of properly identifying them. That group? NIMBY folks and their rich enablers.

Politicians always talk about how climate change will turn our planet into an inhospitable desert wracked with severe weather, but to my knowledge not a single one has actually given up their lavish and materialistic lifestyle in favor of green living. One look at climate hawk Michael Moore's extravagant mansion shows us a man more interested in making bank and his own personal gain than any interest in, say, actual substantive change. The list is long; there isn’t a single notable "activist" of any means whose lifestyle is in keeping with the hippie trippy vibe of the climate change "movement." Most of these people probably hire gardeners and wouldn't know how to plant a tree except for photo ops involving gold-plated shovels. I fondly recall when the Obamas moved into their Marthas' Vineyard mansion right up smack by the side of the ocean- their entire home should be underwater some time in the 2030s so I am not sure they made a good real estate investment.

Thunberg appears oblivious to the NIMBY element of the "problem" she identifies, but the ridicule remains entirely on point- if the world truly is dying (it isn't) it is because of the extravagance of the same people making enormous sums of money off complaining about the issue. The "solutions" they peddle never involve them inconveniencing themselves in any way but they always seem to involve more taxes or- even more often- sending heavy industry to China... and away from the middle class NIMBYists' backyards.
